Kobe Bryant was drafted by the Charlotte Hornets in 1996. But during the pre-draft workout sessions Kobe Bryant, the seventeen-year old dynamic displayed his basketball prowess, which impressed the then Lakers general manager Jerry West. Jerry West, who had the knack to spot star material in players had lured Kobe to join Lakers. Bryant reluctant to play for Hornets jumped at the offer to join Jerry West and his Lakers. Two weeks later, Jerry sent his starting center, Vlade Divac to Hornets to trade places with Bryant.
During the first season itself with Lakers, Kobe, the high-flyer became the most admirable player winning the 1997 Slam Dunk Contest. After years of steadied improvement in his game Bryant has developed into a chief shooting guard in the league. He along with Shaquille O'Neal led the Lakers to three successive NBA championships from 2000 to 2002.
Continuing his successful scoring run Kobe Bryant in 2002-03 season posted 40 plus points per game in nine consecutive games in addition to averaging 6.9 rebounds, 5.9 assists, and 2.2 steals per game.
